Business software: what should you build first?

Turn a process scattered across files, messages and tools into a first scope your team can use.

By KorbonLabs · Published on

Describe one operation from start to finish.

Take a real request: who receives it, processes it, approves it and reads the result? Identify repeated entry, waiting and possible errors. This description helps decide whether existing software is enough, two tools should be connected or a custom application makes sense.

Choose a journey you can test.

An initial scope might follow an order, intervention or approval. The people involved should be able to use it from end to end. Many unfinished modules make acceptance harder. Other needs belong in a roadmap with their dependencies.

  • Roles and permissions: who can view, change, approve or export?
  • Data: sources, quality, history to migrate and output formats.
  • Acceptance: which steps demonstrate that the journey works for your team?

Field work changes technical decisions.

If work takes place on phones or with interrupted connectivity, describe devices and working conditions. Offline use requires synchronisation and data conflict handling. A web application suits some journeys; a mobile application may suit others. Android, iOS and publication in app stores are scoped separately.

Prepare adoption before handover.

Choose testers, prepare representative data and define access to hand over. Discuss onboarding, backups, follow-up and future changes. To assess usefulness, record a baseline and compare the same journey after launch: handling time, errors or repeated entry. No reduction can be promised without measurement.

Gather these for our first conversation.

  1. One priority operational journey
  2. Users, roles and approvals
  3. Sample data and tools to connect
  4. Devices and connectivity constraints
  5. Test criteria and people approving the work
  6. Migration, onboarding and follow-up needs
